Squib. The squib is an electrically initiated gas-generated device. The squib is screwed into a closed
chamber in the housing of the EPJD. When the fire signal is sent from the control box, the gas-generating
material in the squib burns and creates a tremendous amount of pressure inside the system housing. This
pressure is used to force a piston up against the latch of the system, thus breaking the shear bolt and
releasing the extraction line.
Squib Cable. The squib cable is used to connect the squib to the platform cable. The squib cable is 18-
inches long and is protected with a flexible plastic-wrap cover to help prevent damage to the cable when the
platform hits the ground. The plastic wrap can be easily removed and replaced during maintenance. The
squib cable quick disconnects from the platform cable when the link assembly is released from the latch
assembly.

Platform Cable. The platform cable is used to connect the Y-connector to the squib cable. The connectors
at both ends of the cable are modified to quick disconnect. The platform cable is 10-feet long and secured
to the platform. As the platform exits the aircraft, the platform cable will disconnect from the Y-connector.
After the link assembly is released from the latch assembly, the squib cable will disconnect from the
platform cable.
